Does anyone know how private DNS works in terms of the initial name resolution?

You enter there private DNS as a domain name (for example dns.quad9.net), so the initial resolution would have to be done by another DNS server right?

Disclaimer: I am in no way an expert here, so I am just guessing.

Yes, I think the initial lookup would be by another DNS server (ISP probably), but then it would be cached for future use.

dns.quad9.net -> 9.9.9.9

Or something like that.
