A suggestion: you should require people to answer some type of sign up application questions to be a member. Otherwise trolls WILL use your instance to harass people.

Yea please. Having that filter will also help you get into other instances' allowlists ;)

@Thann@lemmy.ml lemme know if you enable it so I can add you to my allowlist

[–] Thann@lemmy.ml 8 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Yeah... =/
I set it to "require application" because there is no UI index of users; I cant really keep track of users and if they're trolling other instances.

That's very good already! Now that bans federate properly, things are a bit easier. I recommend you put a big notice letting people know of the report feature, so that you quickly get notified of abuses. You should also join the "Lemmy Instance Admin Chat" room (listed on the space I believe) to share info with other admins :D

Good luck with your instance and thank you for adding another node to the network!

How does that prevent anything?

politically'neutral? lol is it a joke? neutral generally means fash, we know that, right? or do we still believe in the neutrality of switzerland?

I agree generally that fascists like to hide behind a veil of neutrality, but so do others.

I say "politically neutral" to mean that mods wont ban you for having conservative opinions =/

If someone posts "whats wrong with fascism?" they wont get banned but would be met with ideas.

Trolling would get you banned though, and I don't want to be a safe harbor for those that seek to troll other instances.

ideally, it sounds very nice, almost as a fairy tale. someone might argue you are on a mission to debunk conspiracies and change people mind, but these are just useless assumption no one should make. :P

on a practical level, for now, i see a racist and a pro-nazi thread and you spending loads of energy to counteract all the "silly" things that are being said in those post.

i would never do it myself, but i respect you for that.

however, how long will you last before burning out?

bare in mind that, if my original comment was very much judgemental, i'm beyond that now because i believe you might actually be a good soul. :P

[–] Thann@lemmy.ml 4 points 2 years ago (1 children)

These seems silly but people actually believe this crap. They will never learn better if people never challenge them.

IDK how long I can do it, but at least their questions have been easily debunkable.

[–] mario1312@lemmy.ml 3 points 2 years ago

oh, i wrote "silly" because i was being sarcastic. i don't think they've never been challenged. it's hard to be alive on this planet and never ever being challenged by anyone that sees the world not the way you do. unless you don't want to be challenged that is (e.g. you debunking their "opinions", but they deciding to keep finding new excuses to "counter-debunking" you).

anyway, you do you, of course. wish you the best.

love & solidarity.

You're brave :D Having said that its great that there is now an answer to the free-speech-ban-waah question.

[–] Thann@lemmy.ml 9 points 2 years ago

I'm not a free-speech absolutist, and I'm planning on moderating heavily, so IDK how long that will last lol

What are the main differences between gtio.io and wolfballs (not meant as an insult, but a genuine question to clear up the goals and general philosophy of the instance)?

[–] Thann@lemmy.ml 11 points 2 years ago

Trolling & shitposting are not allowed, only genuine debate topics

Do I need to sign up there too or can I use this Lemmy account?

[–] seahorse@midwest.social 6 points 2 years ago

You can subscribe to whatever communities are there from your current account by searching !<community_name>@gtio.io

[–] Thann@lemmy.ml 6 points 2 years ago

you can use your current account. Im working on a way to make it easier, but you can search for the url of a GTIO community to find it like this

Could you clarify whether source citation is a rule or just a guideline? While that can increase the quality of discourse, it also makes for somewhat higher bar to entry.

Could you also clarify as to whether "be civil" includes character attacks on groups of people, as opposed to just people on the lemmy instance?

A guideline. People can assert things, and people can show evidence. an argument will be more believable with evidence. Repeatedly asserting things in spite of evidence might get your comments deleted though.

character attacks on groups of people

I would imagine that's not civil. If someone sees this please report it and there will probably be a discussion about it.

[–] pingveno@lemmy.ml 3 points 2 years ago

I'm bringing these up because they're subjects we've wrestled with over at /r/moderatepolitics. The subreddit started with one simple rule, no personal attacks. Since then, a few more rules have been added that are more quality-of-discourse improvements. But even the "no personal attacks" rule turns out to be deceptively simple. Who is protected? Can you call a politician a duffus? Where is the line between pointed criticism and personal attacks? Just a few ideas to chew on.
