PSP version of Ys ark of Napishtim. Have so many systems/games to play I tend to jump between games a lot but this one stuck with me, I loved it. Don’t know how many hours I spent in Canaan, but I had a great time getting to the end. Starting Ys seven now

Is the Retroid any good? Every emulation handheld I've managed to get has been trash so far.

Can just get a steam deck. The emulators run great on it so far.

There's a pretty gigantic gap between a $150 device and a $400 device.

That is true, but given the option to save up for a steam deck if you can, the difference in performance and capabilities is also a pretty gigantic leap.

This thing is also pretty lightweight, while the Steam Deck is practically a boat anchor.

It’s fantastic, runs most psp games at 3x resolution. Also runs many ps2 and GameCube games playable, if not well. Dreamcast runs great, the screen is bright and colours are vibrant. I do want a steam deck to go with this for things that need a bit more power but this is pocketable and will be on me when I go out.

Dang, PS2 and GameCube playable? That's honestly a shock to me, I wasn't even sure PS1 would be doable.

My recommendation is a homebrewable Switch. It runs pretty much anything you'd want in terms of emulation up to but not including the Wii U and PS3. Usually you can find them second-hand pretty cheap.

I've got a real early switch I've been wanting to mod for a while, I'm just worried about ending up with a cheap shim that screws the connections on my rails.

Hey, fyi, I made a retroid group on Kbin. Check it out in case there’s anything there you’d find useful.

The address is @retroid, but I’m not sure if clicking that works or not.

Cool - I can indeed click through to the link however my login does not follow. Am I supposed to be able to use the same account over there? Or am I supposed to make a new user, that seems a step too far...

to join communities on other instances, you can get URL for the community on that instance and just paste it into the search. it'll get translated into something your local instance can reference, in this case: https://lemmy.world/c/retroid@kbin.social

from there, you can subscribe just as if it were a community on your local instance

How's the dpad and sticks on that thing, and how does it handle arcade and Saturn emulation? Those are kinds of games I'd really like to have in a handheld with this thing.

[–] Cloud55@lemmy.world 0 points 1 year ago

All the controls are great, nice clicky dpad and the sticks feel good with good range of motion and L3/R3 clicks work well. Saturn works well in the paid yaba sanshiro 2 emulator with some graphics glitches (Saturn emu is hard…) and I am playing baku baku and panzer dragoon. Haven’t tried arcade games but I imagine they would be good… I am able to run some ps2 games at 2x resolution 30fps - 3d games like FFX… this thing has guts. I’m able to carry all the retro games I ever wanted in my pocket.

I haven't played any Ys games but I'll get around to starting them one day. I still play on my PSVITA so I can get them quite easily.

I played the first Y's game on my Sega Master system back in 1989 or so and I have a lot of nostalgia for it... It's cool to see how the games progressed as action RPG games (1 and 2 have been remade and released on mobile too) and it's cool to follow the same characters. Just starting Y's seven I can see they have made a lot of changes to the systems and I can't wait to get into it more.

Ys Seven is a great game, never got through a lot of it but I remember loving it. Love the PSP dearly, wish I had one.
