I can answer number one. In kbin click on your username at the top right. There will be a header with your comments and threads and stuff. There's a small set of arrows to scroll that header. Scroll it to the right and you'll find Subscriptions. That will list the magazines you're subscribed to.

yes and even though it's suuuper unintuitive, the site is still very new, so we can keep it on our list of features to improve
Awesome, was looking for this too, it's under Profile. Clicking your username does nothing, but hovering over it brings out a menu, and clicking on Profile, then scrolling right you'll find the Subscriptions header, which is hidden on my UI so scrolling is needed. Thanks dude.
Using Firefox on a Windows 11 box in kbin.social: Next to my username is a bulleted list icon. Hovering on that pulls up a list:
-
Subscribed
-
Moderated
-
Favorites
-
All
Selecting Subscribed brings me to //kbin.social/sub. This seems to be what you want.
Amazing, thank you very much!
Hi, moderator of m/quickstart here.
They are not dumb questions which is why I had started this community. And as a matter of fact I had already posted regarding some of your questions.
Where can I see a list of the magazines I'm subscribed to? A list, not posts from.
Answered here: How to see a list of all the magazines you are subscribed to
Why do the thumbnails for posts appear distorted? The have incorrect aspect ratio. Is there a way to fix this?
Sorry I don't know yet.
Where can I see a list of local communities?
Disable federation then view the list of magazines.
How is microblogging handled differently from other types of posts? Do they all show up on the home page?
As far as I know it's only if the user selects 'microblog' from the homepage.
EDIT: #5 I don't seem to get any notifications of any sort, visual or otherwise, that I have received responses to a post or comment. Is this the way it's supposed to be?
Answered here: How to get notified when someone replies to your thread or comment
Edit: tested something and it didn't work as expected.
Hey! Great idea for the community, subscribed, and thanks!
Thanks friend! I'm adding more guides as we speak!
Doing god's work, I'll spread the message. I've already found it very helpful.
As a professor of mine once said, the only dumb question is the one that isn't asked.

That's a kbin limitation -- lemmy doesn't hit that, and I don't believe that it can be fixed (well, by flipping a setting) at the moment, though I suspect that it's not hard to fix and probably will see a patch from someone sooner-or-later, as I agree with you that it's pretty visible.
Skimming the list of PRs (pull requests, patches currently waiting for the kbin developer to review them and add them), I do see this:
- maybe the thumbnails will get better. kbin is very new still I think, so the site is more barebones atm probably compared to lemmy
- What do you mean by community? Like the magazine?
- I think microblogging is more like a Tweet, I think kbin is trying to integrate more with Mastodon which basically does tweets.
By the way if you want to add a Thread, which is reddit's "post", then I think you do it by Add a New Article. I was confused cuz there's no Add a new Thread, but I'm guessing you can do it with Add new link, photo, video, or article. Article means a text only thread I think.

Got it, makes sense, I figured as much.
-
Yes, I mean a list of magazines hosted/birthed on kbin.
-
I have no experience with Mastodon, but thank you for suggesting "New Article" which is what I did here, seems like the type of post I was looking to make, which is unintuitive because if you click on "Add New Post" it takes you to microblogging, and that's where my question arised.
Thanks again!
To see more magazines/communities, I click Magazines and then that page has a search bar for magazines (I search for the names of my reddit subreddits) and a list of a lot of them.
I think on redditalternatives, there's also a migration directory to show the corresponding subreddit to community/magazine
Although, I don't know the answer to #2, I do know a slight workaround. If you enable previews, the photos should apper at the bottom of the post in full size.
Edit: It's called auto media preview and it's shows up when you click the settings bar on the bottom of the page.
Yes, I've seen this, I've enabled it for now but photos show up too big and I don't like it. It'll have to do meanwhile. Thanks.
No problem :)
I just installed this script and it fixed the distorted image issue.
Thanks, dude! That works! However, I installed a style sheet which has loads of style customizations and it seems to also have fixed that for me. Here's where I found it, it's amazing: https://kbin.social/m/kbinMeta/t/45300/kbin-css-decluttered-and-parameterized-theme

Oh, I was wondering why thumbnails were so scrunched. Apparently that's not just me.
