Centralized platforms have been so ubiquitous that if something bad would happen with mastodon.social, most (if not many) people would just quit Mastodon (and the Fediverse) instead (libranet.de)

Also the media would point any problems with mastodon.social to Mastodon itself

Edit #2: I was mostly referring to folks from mastodon.social. I'm pretty sure people joining a different server know there are other servers as well where they can move in case things go bad.
