It's amazing that the threat to unmod people actually worked, and a lot of subreddits are reopening, saying that "they have no other option". It shows that mods care more about their place in their subreddit than the community they supposedly did their protest for.

Exactly. They say the threat is that the sub will be reopened and then counter the threat by... reopening it?
The sub is getting opened either way. The choice they have to make has nothing to do with whether the sub opens or not, it's about the principle of the protest. They're showing quite clearly that they never cared for that aspect. They just want the "i'ma good mod you guys, honest" rep. Cowards.
I think time will tell. Maybe opening it up and maintaining mod status will let them be able to burn it down from the inside. /r/pics has shifted the protest into only allowing pictures of John Oliver. Had all the mods been removed and replaced and the sub opened, then thats effectively the end of the protest.
They are not cowards. They own and protect their property from destruction. Wouldn't you say you would?
I came to the same conclusion in a post on a sub that was debating whether they should re-open permanently or not. I'll leave it to you to imagine how well it went over, but it should be added that this behavior doesn't only affect mods or power users; it's true of the userbase in general. People will latch onto anything they can in order to defend crossing their own picket line.
Reddit mods crave the โpowerโ they get from donating their time and labor to a mega corp.
Well, if your choice is failing+personal loss vs. just failing, then which one would you expect most people to go for!?
Btw Piracy moved to:
@piracy@lemmy.dbzer0.com
Run by the same mod. They have their megathread, faqs, and everything up already. Everything that they need for their community to start again in this new place.. I would imagine the users of a sub all about piracy are absolutely fine about leaving Reddit for something new.
ETA: Comment edited so you can see the whole magazine name.
Amazing news to have r/piracy here! Hopefully they have more liberty here and can talk openly
Why do they want a piracy community reopened?
It's kind of hilarious. For years the mods of /r/piracy have been walking on eggshells about what kinds of links and discussion are permitted there because they were afraid Reddit would shut them down at any moment. And now Reddit is tossing the mods that worked so hard to toe their line and forcing them open.
Yeah, that's quite confusing, you'd think they might not be exactly rushing to open one of the more legally complicated subs.
Likely they don't. It was probably sent to all indefinite blackout subs.
It wasn't. I never got anything.
It says "some" that means "not all". I replied to a statement with "all".
So it wasn't.
Though demodding someone can't be automated I think
You can automate anything on your own platform.
Because itโs all about numbers and they donโt care how they get them.
Someone should send this to relevant investors and DMCA authority, Iโm sure theyโll love it
Iโm not a frequent visitor of that subreddit so Iโm not really informed about this, but isnโt this kind of like cutting off your nose to spite your face? I get where youโre coming from, but thereโs a few outcomes here, none of which are conducive to the longevity of communities like this:
- The community is investigated and determined to be in violation of the DMCA for some reason. This forces reddit to close it, but may also trigger a closer look into organized communities like this one.
- If the aforementioned reason is because of links obscured behind hashes (as pirate subreddits love to do as their workaround), this has far-reaching implications and would directly affect the communities on the fediverse or other websites in one way or another, as it would be proven to not be as effective as people seem to think it is.
- If the aforementioned reason is because of information regarding pirated content being hosted there, then thatโs even worse, for obvious reasons, since they would be willing to file a DMCA for the mere mention of offending content.
- If nothing happens, then it was essentially a waste of time; the only way it wouldnโt be a waste of time is if there was a positive outcome. I donโt see one, personally.
Obviously companies can DMCA for whatever reason they want, but the entire idea of communities like this is to stay under the radar.
Maybe Iโm completely off-base with what Iโm saying; this was just a thought I was tossing around in my head while I was trying to sleep shortly after reading this comment. It just doesnโt seem terribly productive. The only part that could be somewhat impactful would be if the relevant investors became aware, but the fact of the matter is that reddit will bend ass-backwards for these people, and if they were to take issue with that subreddit, then itโs gone.
Completely agree. I'd rather have these communities fly under the radar than get unwanted attention.
I foresee another great article..
Reddit CEO forces a number of subreddits to open, starting with 'copyright infringement' subreddit /r/Piracy and 'anti-capitalist' subreddit r/antiwork
Just keep digging spez. Maybe you'll make it to China and you can start WeQQit. Not to be confused with Wreqqit, which is what you're doing here.
Almost like he's doing it on purpose...
Damn, you absolutely bodied spez lmao
"If you are not able or willing to reopen and maintain the community please let us know."
No, don't do that. Stall and don't answer for as long as possible. As soon as you tell them you are not willing, you will be replaced.
I got removed within an hour. I didn't even had time to read it :D
Would it be possible to make a vote and ask the community if they want to stay closed? They are claiming mods should be like representatives and responding as if mods view themselves like lords. Show them a democratic excuse that you are only reflecting the community.
Wait this doesn't add up. The posted screen shot isn't coercive. It's asking if anyone on the mod team is willing to betray their fellow mods. If not, cool. Sounds like there were one or more mods on the /r/piracy team who chose the "betray" thing.
I got demoded by reddit admins though
Understood, I'm not saying this wasn't sleazy. Just saying that they appear to have gotten permission from x% of mods on the sub.
how do you gather that?
From reading the screen shots you shared:
"We are reaching out to any moderators currently on the mod team who would be willing to take steps to reopen the community"
and
"If you have any question regarding your removal, you can contact the moderator team for /r/Piracy"
I mean, it's pretty obvious one or more mods rolled on you. I'm sorry I'm not trying to be argumentative with you, it's very shitty and Reddit sucks. We wouldn't be discussing this here if I was a friend of reddit.
No really I'm telling you, I've seen the modlog, it was reddit admins. Other mods cannot remove me as I was the top mod.
You're not following what I'm getting at. Reddit wants to have plausible deniability so they reach out to mod teams asking them to Judas on their fellow mods. We don't know how many agreed to turn on you -- maybe it was one, maybe it was 51%, maybe it was all of them.
The mods go to Reddit and say "yes we'll work with you to get the subreddit back up. But we don't have access to demod the head mod." Reddit says "say no more, I got u." They demod you, and say "If you have any questions go speak to your fellow mods. WE didn't make the decision, we were asked to demod you by your fellow mods."
Your fellow mods also have the extra perk that they can deny betraying you. "WE didn't demod you, Reddit did! SEE the mod logs!"
Plausible deniability all around.
I mean fair point, I do suspect one mod might jave scabbed but I guess we'll see. With pirates, there's some reputation on the line in our communities. If people see your name backstabbing your peers for corporate overlords, it's not a good look. I do know that the 3 mods I added recently are legit
Lemmy is infinitely better anyways

Classic Prisoner's Dilemma.
Hey, I think the dot at the end of URL broke the cross post and its hard to participate at the main post so ^^
Vulcan is really sure that potential investors are delighted with this kind of development on the Snoo Platform.
Why "Vulcan" particularly? The star trek species, the Roman deity, or something else?
Great question!
I chose Vulcan because of the Roman deity, although the Star Trek species is a good coincidence :)
And as for the Sphere, because it's a cool addition.
One nice thing about being into spheres is that they're always a round.
Thanks for sharing!
I decided to check mod CoC and found this
they really do be trying to get communities back up using the community that's already fed up with spez's crap
