Google Domains has been sold to Squarespace and all the domains are going to transfer over to there.

Thanks for ruining my vacation, Google.

At least they don't just shut it down like with other things.

what the fuck all my domains were on Google Domains. Maaaan.

Is there a registrar people recommend?

I've been using Porkbun. It's cheap and provides all of the TLDs I need.

I just moved a domain to Google Domains last month. Yaaay

I transferred mine to cloudflare who does not charge any markup.

I’ve also got all of my domains in Porkbun. I don’t use their nameservers though. I usually use cloudflare for that, so you could look into them, too.

it's yet another proof that google can't be trusted when it comes to the continuity of their products. I've been fooled many times, but now and forever it's a no-go.

That's actually surprising, I've used Google Domains & Sites and although they weren't the cheapest, they where the most accessible.

And no mention of what happens to their API but knowing google it either goes away entirely or totally changes with significant rework required.

Related, the reason I no longer use any google API: https://steve-yegge.medium.com/dear-google-cloud-your-deprecation-policy-is-killing-you-ee7525dc05dc

FYI, you can register domains through Cloudflare, who doesn't add anything to the underlying fees.

That's so crazy to me but that's Google for you.

How Sundar still has a job is mind boggling. So many failures and obvious mismanagement.

Can someone give me a ELI5 for why that is bad and people are planning on migrating away to other services?

I have 15-20 domains with Google so it'll be a pain to manage something else. Even if I can't trust Google's privacy or product continuity, I do trust Google's security and have multi factor enabled already, so having my domains protected by them is a great thing. I'm pretty much always logged into my Google account on my PC so it's one fewer account to manage.

Squarespace is probably fine, but I bought my first domains through a web builder and web host years ago and they slowly raised prices and reduced features until I had to leave them and moved to Google.
