"He will need to be fed once a day. He prefers feline supplement number 25."

"I understand."

"And he will require water. And you must provide him with a sandbox. And you must talk to him. Tell him he is a pretty cat. And a good cat."

"I will feed him."

"Perhaps that will be enough."

I've spent the majority of my life upset that apparently in the 23rd century they have regressed and no longer have "kitty litter" and are instead dealing with non-absorbent silica and coral granules? Like who made this narrative decision?

As someone who hasn't seen the original content this meme is based off- it would be great to know what was going on here. Still funny though

Data has an ambition to learn to be human and chooses to love a cat. It's important when, later, he has to prove he is sentient in court.

Somehow, banging a (functionally) drunk subordinate officer who probably reports directly to him worked in his favor as well.

"Make sure to feed him, and pet him, and tell him he is a pretty cat"

Worf: " ... I will feed him"

Also important 30 years later when he is able to gain control of a new body from Lore via his memories of Spot!

It’s interesting that Data shows understated empathy there. That seems like a very human thing

Maybe data has learned to recognize cat levels of empathy, sorta like the way neurodivergent folks on the spectrum emulate it?

Maybe I'm over thinking a meme ...nah!

neurodivergent folks on the spectrum emulate [empathy]

Cat jokes aside, bit of a misconception; ASD folks generally have comparable levels of empathy to neurotypical folks, it's just perceived that we don't because we often either lack cognitive empathy, or don't express it like others expect.

I, for one, actually have pretty good cognitive empathy. I actually struggle with too much affective empathy; I often involuntarily feel what those around me are feeling. It's awesome at concerts. Sucks in public transportation. Being stuck in a loud, smelly metal tube, rubbing shoulders with hundreds of anxious or irate commuters is my own personal hell.

incredibly accurate depiction of what cat ownership is like

[–] PolandIsAStateOfMind@lemmy.ml -1 points 1 year ago

cat ownership

As in "being owned by a cat"

[–] Kempeth@feddit.de 2 points 1 year ago

I mean Targs are basically cat software running on wild boar hardware.

[–] Dream_state@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

Trust Data not Lore

Everyone is talking about some data or sth and I just realized that "Data" is the name of the guy in this context

[–] socialjusticewizard@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

What? With half of Lemmy being star trek subs right now?

My friend I have a ~~dated and often slow paced~~ pretty solid show to introduce you to.

[–] ptrknvk@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)
