I've been browsing communities in other instances, and I noticed that sometimes not all comments show up when viewing from different instances.

For example, this post on !food@beehaw.org shows having 17 comments when viewed on beehaw, but only 6 when viewed from lemmy.one:

Here are the links to the post:

lemmy.one link

Is this just a quirk of how federation works or is it specifically a problem on my end?

I'm having the same issue. I can't even see the comments below this post when viewing it from the slrpnk instance.

Apparently when instances first start communicating with each other, they don't load all the old comments to prevent unnecessary requests. If you want to see a specific comment that was made before you connected the servers, you can copy the link to that comment and serach it in the search bar of your instance, that will force the server to load it and you'll be able to interact with it. Hope this helps someone.

I came here to ask this exact question..... I think I may see what's going on, from me looking at posts in was looking at being logged in Lemmy via Lemmy.one, and not being logged in on a web browser...... Comments I noticed that were not showing on my logged in Lemmy.one session, were from individuals coming from instances that are blocked by lemmyone, like lemmygrad.ml or something along those lines..... Someone correct me if I'm wrong? If so I wish that was something that would be up to the end user in the future
