I know Reddit has r/redditrequest, and if there isn't a process yet it seems like something Lemmy will have to tackle in the near future.

The instance admin can grant you mod status.

Have you tried contacting the person who initially created the community? If you click on their name you can see their profile and send them a message directly.

Otherwise click on one of the admin names in the sidebar and send them an message asking about it.

I just messaged them, but they haven't had any activity on their account since creation (including in their own subs), so I don't have a lot of hope.

Worst case scenario, if I don't get a response in a week I will try contacting Ruud. Having to contact the instance admin directly for this sort of thing seems unsustainable though.

I’d just contact Ruud now. It looks like at least a couple of folks came in and just started creating communities. I just reached out to him about one…

That would be up to the admin of each individual instance owner how to handle that on their instance.
