Why can I not find certain communities from my instance? (lemmy.reckless.dev)

I used a site to find a Lemmy instance closest to me, and created an account. I’ve noticed however, I cannot access certain communities which are hosted on other instances. Example:

My server of choice is lemmy.reckless.dev. I want to subscribe to either apple_enthusiast@lemmy.world or apple@lemmy.ml. However, I get a 404 error when trying to access this from my instance (https://lemmy.reckless.dev/c/apple@lemmy.ml). I also get no results if I go to lemmy.reckless.dev > Communities > All and enter “Apple”.

What am I doing wrong? Is the instance I chose just not working correctly?

lemmy.ml has been down all day, so that could be why that one isn't working. This link doesn't work for you?
