CDR is removal of CO2 from the atmosphere - an essential basket of technologies for achieving UN IPCC best outcomes to mitigate climate change. This is a community for discussing advances and issues of CDR.

As we devise systems of CO2 removal over the next decades, a key focus is how to create these systems to further the goal of social justice. Although big oil companies would like to see their infrastructure converted to greener, but still private and shareholder-benefiting; CDR projects offer many opportunities to directly improve the lives of local and under-served populations. When we sequester carbon in soil, that can benefit local farmers - by improving their land AND being a source of negative-emission revenue. As coastal areas flood and return to marine habitats, they can become public recreation and fishery support.

I am cross posting some comments here, that I made in my nascent CDR "microblog" on kbin - a channel that I am finding less effective in its current state of development.

"The past and ongoing emissions of CO2 are absolutely unjust, among their various other detractions. The tendency to continue business-as-usual is at odds with everything that we must now do. When I first became involved in environmentalism, the slogan was "think globally, act locally" and I have never ceased in that. There is injustice, and it will not end. But I will focus my efforts toward bring about the changes I want to see. Those changes prominently include achieving net-zero CO2 emission in my life (I could have another 30 years or so if I am lucky). It would be great if that happens because every coal mine, oil well, and natural gas well in the world were to be capped. But I suspect that is a bad gamble. As a hedge, and an optimistic effort to turn the balance toward actual NEGATIVE emission - I, having a low influence on the machinations of oil companies, try to understand the options for undoing some of what we've done - in ways that increase some of the social justice we have lost."
