Cross posted from /c/memes

You don't need a VPN when you use tor. In fact, it's probably less secure since it's going through a private server that might have a government black box hooked up. Also, no FBI or CIA agent is ever gonna tell you to use tor???

There's a popular conspiracy theory that Tor is a FBI/CIA honeypot

I assume that's what this is about

But based on my understanding of Tor, you are correct. I always disconnect from my VPN when using Tor

It's more complicated than just "conspiracy theory". They have taken over servers and run honeypots busting cp creators and distributors.

Running a honey pot and baiting people into revealing their identity (what's actually happened), and the network itself being a honeypot, are two very different things

The people who have been caught on tor doing illegal stuff just had poor op sec. I think pompompurin (former owner of breach forums) got caught because he used a personal email talking to someone lol.

The guy who created the Silk Road got caught because he recycled the same usernames for different accounts, one of which could be traced back to his identity

Also, he logged in via a library's public wifi

I just watched a YouTube video about that last week

[–] v3x@lemm.ee 4 points 1 year ago

yeah and he also left his personal email in an old post he made years ago, promoting the silk road when it was new

Does anyone actually run tor without a vpn?

[–] nebula42@lemmy.world 8 points 1 year ago

Don't it's a bad idea
