I on a bit of spring cleaning deleteting accounts and such ( reddit fell victim to it today : ) ) that I don't use, one of them being Deezer.

OK so I went to the app I still had on my phone and looks like I can't even access it because Deezer free is no longer avaible on my country ( why? Fuck them users, that's why ).

That sucks let's go to the website just to be presented with same shit, but at least they let me log in just for fuck's sake because THERE WAS NO WAY TO GO TO MY ACCOUNT SETTINGS.

I then tried using VPN to no luck guess the account is associated with my location.

Stupid blockroads require stupid solutions so I said fuck it and subscribed Dezzer premium with their free 1 month trial.

That worked I could go to my account settings I saw the delete button, clicked it gave me an warning that I would have to retype my password, that would be fine if THERE WAS A FUCKING INPUT OR PROMPT.

So I searched around and nothing, logged in and out a few times, just to my FUCKING surprise THE PROMPT ONLY FUCKING APEARS IF YOU LOG IN WITH YOUR PHONE NUMBER.

Fortunally no other fucking shenanigans happened, now I just gotta cancel the subscription on PayPal, but what the fuck was this.

Hate shit like this. Just this morning I went to join a Discord server for motorsports. Don't really use Discord too much, but wanted to see what was going on. It says my email is verified, but I need to add my phone number. Fine, enter my number, then get the code and when I enter the code, it pops up an error saying that number is already in use so I can't join.

Well no shit it's in use. It's in use by me. All Google searches say to delete the phone number in the settings, but there is no phone number in my settings. Apparently this is a common issue in Discord, but they refuse to acknowledge it. WTF is wrong with these companies. Why piss off your own customers?

I still don't get the phone verification, is such an insecure method of verification compared with likes of 2FA through an authenticator app or an security key, but still it is pushed down our throats like vegetables in 3yo. Not to metion, like what if I don't have a SIM card, that's odd for an adult but little kids could have phones just to video call the parents or make VoIP calls.

Oh, the reason Discord does it is not for security, it's for safety. Buying new phone numbers is more expensive than email so they expect people to not do it to bypass a ban for example.

I’m subscribed to deezer for music discovery and using something like deemix for offline use, but their discovery is so bad I signed up for a trial of Apple Music and will likely be cancelling my deezer sub until I need to make an offline archive

Corporations doing shady shit to keep their revenue streams from being interrupted is par for the course these days. Thanks for posting, now I know not to use Deezer.

I honestly only used it, because a while back you had an cracked version called freezer which would let you listen to higher quality music, both on mobile as well as desktop, but eventually quit because their catalogue region lock was annoying AF, like bro it's is just music outside of my region why u blocking me.

But this shit was anti consumer to another level.

If you are a EU citizen, you can send them a GDPR data removal request and they will have to comply, even if you can't delete your account manually.

Life safer honestly used it a few times, I am bit obssed with leaving hanging threads behind, so nowadays I just create new emails and stuff as well as trying to keep my opsec to the max in platforms not giving them things that they don't already, but for a regular Joe that uses the same email account for everything, our EU, not always perfect, but got their back's.

It's strange, I deleted multiple Deezer accounts over the years and Deezer never asked me the phone number, have you tried contact the Deezer support?

[–] betrayedinsect@lemmy.one 1 points 1 year ago

Nop didn't try it, I just wanted to get that done and the overhead of the back and forth would be worth it, worse case I would just delete the email associated with that account and go on with my day.

But I think most of my problems were due to the region lock, but that password prompt not appearing was annoying AF.
