Quick and diry guide to fermenting fruit - cider and wine
What's a yeast block?
I tried to ferment some beer with yeasts isolated from sourdough starter. It took longer in bottles to clear but was fine after that.
Yeah something similar happened last time I used a Sourdough starter on a strawberry jam wine.
Too impatient? For a hobby where you wait weeks or months, what's a couple of days?
I would have made a starter with the kveik.
Sourdough starter will be interesting! Will it have a sourdough flavor? Sounds like a fun experiment.
I did make a starter with the Kveik. I gave it a couple hours to try and reproduce.
I will be going away in less than two weeks so wanted to get this done or at least underway before I left.
It may very well work out, kveik might like being underpitched (though 1 gram for a batch of mead might be too little even for it). You mqy just have some funky mixing of yeasts going on. If it works out well enough, do keep some yeast from this batch, you might be well on your way to having a house yeast.
Or it could also go very bad. Never know until you try.
Thanks! I actually didn't think about starting a house yeast but that's actually a very good idea. I have put it off because I am currently living with parents while job hunting, and they are in the process of selling the house.
