Lately when trying to comment I'm getting the message Language_not_allowed even if I type something like 'test'. Any idea what's happening here?

Yes some subs require a language set afaik, so posting without changing the language thing next to post and preview from undetermined to a language will result in this error. It basically says, this language is not allowed, which means that maybe this sub for example allows English only.

I think.

I was very confused about this a month ago :D I don't think this was a great addition to Lemmy.

I have had that issue as well, from time to time. So far it seems to help if you allow all languages in your profile settings.

Thanks, I'll try setting it Undetermined and see if that works.

That's odd. If I'm enabling undetermined I'm missing posts e.g the one of sexy_peach here but I am able to comment.

I was just in a community that wouldn't allow me to respond. I just set that individual post to "english" and it allowed me to.

Yes, that works. Great tip.

I did not mean just undetermined, but all of them. 🙂

I see. I have that as my current setting now. I was still unable to comment in one community but the tip from Lost_Wanderer did the trick for that.

This happens if a community specifies a set of allowed languages, and you are trying to post in a different one. It sounds like the UX and error messages should definitely be improved though. To reproduce this issue, can you say which community you tried to post in and what languages you had enabled at the time?

It was in the https://beehaw.org/c/chat community and I had no specific language selected in my settings. When I changed the language setting in the community to English I was able to post a comment.

That community only allows posting in English, and you probably tried to comment with the default language which is "undetermined". In this case it should really be able to select English as default language, as its the only option.
