Rep. Nancy Mace (R-S.C.) donned a red “A” on her shirt on Tuesday after her vote to oust former Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) left her feeling “demonized” on Capitol Hill, she said.

“I’m wearing the ‘scarlet letter’ after the week that I just had, last week, being a woman up here and being demonized for my vote and for my voice,” Mace told reporters, apparently referencing the 19th century novel in which the protagonist was condemned to wear a red “A” – or a “scarlet letter” – after becoming pregnant out of wedlock.

“I’m here to let the rest of the world know and the country know: I’m on the side of the people. I’m not on the side of the establishment,” Mace continued. “And I’m going to do the right thing every single time no matter the consequences because I don’t answer to anybody in DC. I don’t answer to anyone in Washington. I only answer to the people.”

Mace has faced fierce criticism following her decision to oust McCarthy from the Speakership – the first time in history the House has voted to remove its leader.

if she'd actually read the book she'd know that hester was made to wear it she didn't choose to wear it and the republicans, whom she is a part of, are the puritans who forced her to wear it

[–] ChicoSuave@lemmy.world 17 points 1 year ago

That requires reading, which they proudly declare they don't do.

[–] GenesisJones@lemmy.world 16 points 1 year ago

Yeah but she probably only saw easy a where she opted to sew it onto her clothes.

[–] LEDZeppelin@lemmy.world 99 points 1 year ago (2 children)

What a fucking tool. If she was “on the side of people” she wouldn’t be a republican

[–] cupcakezealot@lemmy.blahaj.zone 26 points 1 year ago

she's also trying to play herself off as a moderate despite being someone who has peddled the most qanon of qanon conspiracy theories.

So she's for women's rights? I wonder who she voted for president? She's either a hypocrite or very stupid or both.

[–] billiam0202@lemmy.world 18 points 1 year ago

She’s either a hypocrite or very stupid or both.

Mace has since defended her vote, arguing McCarthy broke several promises to her in exchange for her support in January, on issues including women’s rights.

Is she upset that women still have rights?

She is a republican, so yes

[–] ATDA@lemmy.world 28 points 1 year ago

As is typical they miss the point of the source material.

But if it make her feel better I agreed with my Republican rep's vote against McCarthy and still left him a shitty insult layden voicemail telling him he should vote for a Dem.

[–] NightLily@lemmy.basedcount.com 26 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I wonder what the "issues including women’s rights" actually are supposed to be?

[–] grabyourmotherskeys@lemmy.world 24 points 1 year ago

That's it. That's as detailed as she's going to get.

[–] Xariphon@kbin.social 17 points 1 year ago

If you don't want to be demonized, stop acting like a demon.

This is the best summary I could come up with:

Mace has faced fierce criticism following her decision to oust McCarthy from the Speakership – the first time in history the House has voted to remove its leader.

Mace has since defended her vote, arguing McCarthy broke several promises to her in exchange for her support in January, on issues including women’s rights.

Her Republican colleagues have claimed McCarthy broke other promises to them in exchange for their support in January. Rep.

Republicans met on Tuesday to try to find consensus on a candidate, but members still seemed split as they emerged from the room.
