the-swift-tricker:

it's easy to mock the concept of batman's secret identity and think it's ridiculous that nobody would realize that he's bruce wayne but if some lady suddenly showed up late at night dressed in full military grade kevlar and started fighting crime in los angeles i wouldn't look at that and think "ah it's kylie jenner

you-got-it-capstar:

Same logic applies to Clark Kent tbh I wouldn't see Superman, the crazy powerful alien, zooming past me and go "i think he's secretly an award winning journalist"

the-swift-tricker: "it's a bird, it's a plane, it's...anderson cooper?!

appendingfic:

Me: "sees masked man fighting both crime and police corruption* Me: I have no idea who that is, but it is NOT a billionaire.

People don't even recognize Tony Hawk WITH a skateboard, bless them. Source: the-swift-tricker 66,205 notes

Exactly. Tony Hawks is the ultimate proof that the Clark Kent disguise would work on most people.

He's world renowned, but because he looks like just a regular guy, nobody recognises him, and he's not even trying to disguise himself in any way

[–] kraftpudding@lemmy.world 30 points 1 year ago (3 children)

He's so regular even you got his name wrong in a comment about him. Unless you're really talking about that english guy who traveled round Ireland with a fridge. I wouldn't call him world renowned though.

[–] spamfajitas@lemmy.world 18 points 1 year ago

No no, it's Tony Hawks, the Pro Skater who had to go underground for some reason.

[–] Th4tGuyII@kbin.social 10 points 1 year ago

Didn't even notice that myself - that's definitely ironic, I'll leave that mistake there as it proves my point haha

[–] PwnTra1n@lemmy.world 5 points 1 year ago

just gotta spread his legend enough,,,

[–] Ser_Salty@feddit.de 10 points 1 year ago (1 children)

And most people see Supes from like 50 meters away

Also just look at the scene of Christopher Reeve changing between Clark and Supes.

[–] Th4tGuyII@kbin.social 5 points 1 year ago

Exactly. The only people I'd suspect even notice a similarity would be the people that know Clark, but most would probably assume it to be a coincidence at most.

in The Expanse SOOO many people recognize the Deputy Under Secretary of the UN, and know her name.

Honestly, I could have a full on conversation with Kalama Harris where she's introduced as "Ms Harris" and she says "call me Kamala" and I may not twig.

Internet Today mentioned this phenomena the other day. Slash from Guns n Roses instantly becomes unrecognizable when he takes off his hat. That's it. That's all it takes.

[–] NounsAndWords@lemmy.world 5 points 1 year ago

That’s it. That’s all it takes.

Is it though? What about the sunglasses?

[–] mister_flibble@lemm.ee 34 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Somewhere in Gotham City, there's a planning and zoning guy probably making bank for playing dumb about all of Bruce Wayne's "totally not a batcave you guys" building permits.

[–] zib@kbin.social 36 points 1 year ago

Something tells me the batcave does not have OSHA's stamp of approval.

To be fair with super man I'd imagine at least one of his coworkers would think man Clark looks a lot like super man with glasses

[–] Cavemanner@lemmy.world 32 points 1 year ago

I've definitely seen a page from an issue where one of his coworkers says something like "Hey, you guys ever think Clark kinda looks like that Superman?" and they all bust out laughing before another one says "Imagine Clark saving anyone!"

[–] Steeve@lemmy.ca 24 points 1 year ago

Tony Hawk's alter ego is guy who looks like Tony Hawk

[–] CitizenKong@lemmy.world 23 points 1 year ago

Nobody recognized Henry Cavill without glasses, in a Superman shirt, in front of a movie poster of Superman.

[–] MargotRobbie@lemm.ee 11 points 1 year ago (1 children)

You'd be surprised at how well this works on the Internet too.

All I have to do is say some funny things here and there once in a while.

I mean, reddit and twitter even dug up that old Letterboxd account (whose ownership I can neither confirm nor deny), so I thought I'd try a different approach this time.

Turns out all it takes to throw them off is to use an obviously AI generated profile picture and "borrowing" an idea from another Margo on Bojack Horseman.

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 11 points 1 year ago

When I lived in L.A. I had a few encounters with celebrities who I didn't realize were celebrities until after the fact because they were removed from the context in which I think of them. So that makes sense to me.

As someone who use to work at a restaurant near Tony's house. I never got the jokes about him not being recognized. Like sure he's an old dad now, but he still looks the same

[–] candybrie@lemmy.world 20 points 1 year ago

Well it's because half his Twitter posts were about people not recognizing him. Even he had a skateboard. Or when they see his ID says Anthony Hawk.

[–] burgersc12@sh.itjust.works 12 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

There was a subreddit for it, so it became a semi known phenomenon /r/dontyouknowimtonyhawk

[–] SatanicNotMessianic@lemmy.ml 9 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Anderson Cooper

Oh, don’t start that again! Anderson Cooper wears glasses. Captain Amazing doesn’t wear glasses.

[–] agamemnonymous@sh.itjust.works 5 points 1 year ago (1 children)

He takes them off when he transforms

[–] funkless_eck@sh.itjust.works 7 points 1 year ago

preposterous. no one who wears glasses ever takes them off and doesn't wear them again for 3 or 4 days and lives in a perpetual blur that would be easier to navigate if they just wore their glasses but for some reason don't

[–] Dagwood222@lemm.ee 9 points 1 year ago

In the comics, they've shown Batman moderating a website called 'Bruce Wayne is Batman.' It's like 'birds aren't real,' and constantly plays off the idea that Wayne is a complete wuss and a giant coward.

[–] LetKCater2U@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 year ago

I don’t think I would be surprised if Anderson Cooper was a vigilante.

IMO 90% of the Tony Hawk stories he made up. Also, dudes a dickhead, he told a child to fuck off when he asked for an autograph at my local skatepark when I was younger.
