Scifi is when you get shot by a blaster bolt

Fantasy is when you take an arrow to the knee

If there's magic, supernatural powers, or a force of any kind, it's Science Fantasy

[–] beteljuice@lemmy.ml 11 points 1 year ago

So we are living in science fantasy. No one has any idea where the four fundamental forces come from. They just "exist" like magical forces.

Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.

Corrollary: Any technology distinguishable from magic is insufficiently advanced.

[–] downpunxx@kbin.social 3 points 1 year ago

generic fantasy

[–] paholg@lemm.ee 2 points 1 year ago

The elves aren't aliens, humans are.

[–] irmoz@reddthat.com 1 points 1 year ago

Still high fantasy

Does it have a scanner bed or do they just stick you in a regular old bed by a waterfall and hope for the best?

Annoying dialogue? Powerful but doesn't help the hero? Hands out quests?

He is a video game NPC.

My dividing line is “am I watching for the plot or for the ideas?”

Spock: set phasers to stun

Legolas: uhmmm... Arrows kill

[–] Norgur@kbin.social 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I separate by the mechanics at play: do supernatural things exist in places they do not exist in reality (humans doing telekinesis, mind reading for example... Or outright magic like the force)? If yes, it's likely fantasy.

[–] aaaa@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

Where does subspace fall on this line? Stargates? The TARDIS?

Sometimes the science is magical. The line is pretty fuzzy

Humans - Humans (duh)

Vulcans - Elves / High Elves

Romuluans - Dark Elves / Blood Elves

Klingons - Orcs

Andorians - Ice Elves

This is as much as I could come up with.

This checks out.

Who would be the dwarves? Ferengi?
