This entire album is fuckin excellent. Stagger Lee, Henry Lee (featuring PJ Harvey), and my personal favorite, The Curse of Millhaven. Oh, and O’Malley’s bar. The entire album is fuckin great. Intense, but amazing.

I had this CD but I think one of my former house mates pinched it!
I had no idea this collab existed. Thank you Aussies for educating the rest of us 🙏

The commonly accepted narrative is that Nick Cave saved Kylie’s career by elevating her from a disposable pop star to indie credibility. Though it’s more likely to be the other way around: before Where The Wild Roses Grow, Cave was largely unknown outside the goth subculture, and getting a bit old there. Kylie exposed him to Middle Australia and arguably put him on a path to National Treasure status, beloved of middle-aged people who read serious newspapers, and few of whom would have ever listened to a Birthday Party record.
I fucking love the birthday party.
Thanks for this take, though. Minogue was never really on my radar, even after being featured on this excellent album. Interesting to hear, because I love Nick Cave. Although, admittedly, I haven’t really gotten into anything he’s put out since Abattoir Blues / Lyre of Orpheus. And even a few of the albums between from her to eternity (my favorite NC&TBS album, followed closely by The Firstborn is Dead) and Lyre are hit or miss for me. But the birthday party didn’t really miss. Although they took way fewer swings. And I like both grinderman albums. But the bad seeds stuff really ebbed and flowed in quality, especially later on.
