Documenting hate-speech, conspiracy theories, apologia/revisionism, and general tankie behaviour across the fediverse

What is a Tankie?

Alternatively, a detailed blog post about Tankies.

(caution of bias)

Basic Rules:

Sh.itjust.works Instance rules apply! If you are from other instances, please be mindful of the rules. — Basically, don't be a dick.

Hate-Speech — You should be familiar with this one already; practically all instances have the same rules on hate speech.

Apologia(Using the Modern terminology for Apologia) No Defending, Denying, Justifying, Bolstering, or Differentiating authoritarian acts or endeavours, whether be a Pro-CCP viewpoint, Stalinism or any variation of Tankie Ideology. There is no justifying Genocide.

Revisionism — Downplaying or denying atrocities past and present will result in an immediate ban.

If you're violating instance rules, you'll typically be warned. Continuing poor behaviour after being warned will result in a ban or removal of your comments. Bans typically only last seven days, but repeat infractions will have longer sentences. You may ask to be unbanned.

tbf, the political compass test is ancient and was never great to begin with. You have to almost try to get a certain result.

[–] yata@sh.itjust.works 18 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (2 children)

That particular compass (and unfortunately the only one ever used on the internet) was designed by right wing libertarians to reflect their ideas in a postive light and all others in a negative light. The terms chosen for the axes are vague and ambigous, and the combination of precisely those terms in that manner very unorthodox.

It is completely useless for any actual identification of political beliefs, and is not used by any political scientists. It is unsurprising that tankies test the way they do, because it was precisely designed to lure people who are largely ignorant of political science into libertarianism.

That particular compass (and unfortunately the only one ever used on the internet)

I wish making an axis-oriented test like that was easier, I'd make such a great political horoscope

[–] catastrophicblues@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 year ago (2 children)

What do you recommend instead?

[–] fsxylo@sh.itjust.works 10 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Not using Science flavored horoscopes.

[–] PugJesus@kbin.social 9 points 1 year ago

You can take my funny colored squares from my cold, dead hands

[–] Ajen@sh.itjust.works 4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I think they had a valid question. Do you think a one-dimensional left/right scale is better than the 2 dimensional political compass? Is there a better method of classifying political beliefs for those of us who don't have degrees in political science?

[–] Blamemeta@lemm.ee 3 points 1 year ago

Personally, more axes the better, but that calls into question, are we playing teams, or are we trying to do actual science?

Maybe there shouldn't be a scheme simplifying a complex matter to two axes, coupled with these short questionnaires? Or it shouldn't be taken seriously at all? PCM is a Harry Potter houses test for political fandoms on the internet, it has it's niche, but neither it, nor other models bring something meaningful to the table for it is by design a gross oversimplification.

totally agreed

Amazing that I actually agree with these dweebs on so many things, but I still can't stand them.

[–] Draedron@lemmy.dbzer0.com 13 points 1 year ago

I think a lot of the ideals they want are good and something I agree on. However their worldview is so narrow that they see everything that is seen as opposite to capitalism as good. Even countries that commit crimes even worse than some of the most capitalist countries. Then there are also a bunch of trolls and assholes there who are incapable to discuss why they like or dont like something

[–] echodot@feddit.uk 10 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

That's because they've all got the emotional maturity of an obnoxious 12-year-old. They haven't got a clue what they're talking about and are incapable of nuance.

They'd be alright if they actually followed the rules of social discourse rather than acting the way they do and posting their shit pictures.

[–] blargerer@kbin.social 9 points 1 year ago (1 children)

It's not that surprising. Their politics are mostly fine. They are just assholes.

[–] Ilovethebomb@lemmy.ml 4 points 1 year ago

I'd love to see what their actual answers were.

[–] RiikkaTheIcePrincess@kbin.social 10 points 1 year ago (2 children)

...Lib left? Really? The Chapo Trash House comm on the tankie meme-trash instance is full of some kinda mindless 'communism'-worshipping anarchists who love to brigade everything with tankie horsecrap?

Ugh. Guess I'll go join the 'post-left' Raddle cult and kill myself for having ever eaten meat. Beats having to circlejerk to Vlad/Xi slashfic and yell at people for thinking there's anything bad outside of NATO all day

[–] cacheson@kbin.social 4 points 1 year ago

thinking there's anything bad outside of NATO

WHATABOUTISM!

[–] Nerd02@lemmy.basedcount.com 9 points 1 year ago (1 children)

The OG test is notorious for having a strong LibLeft bias so it's not really surprising that they got those results. A much more preferred alternative is the SapplyValues test.

https://sapplyvalues.github.io/

That been said, it's still ridiculous that they all ended up in almost the exact same little square.

[–] Blamemeta@lemm.ee 3 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

How on Earth did I get slight left wing?

Man, Ive been around the internet too long, I just want guns for all and less immigration.

Elect this person.

[–] cacheson@kbin.social 9 points 1 year ago

That entire thread summed up:

I'm an evil stalinist and it says I'm a hardcore anarchist

And they are genuinely upset about it.

[–] Lazerbeams2@ttrpg.network 7 points 1 year ago

Well that doesn't look at all like an echo chamber

[–] MonsieurHedge@kbin.social 7 points 1 year ago (2 children)

To be fair, I legitimately don't think anyone on the "political right" has anything of value to contribute to any community anywhere.

[–] cacheson@kbin.social 9 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Conservativism, in the sense of being cautious about change, is an important perspective to have. The problem is that a lot of people that call themselves conservatives are actually reactionaries.

[–] Blamemeta@lemm.ee 0 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Reactionaries are just reacting to proposed changes, its inline with being cautious about change. Maybe a little too cautious, but still

[–] cacheson@kbin.social 1 points 1 year ago

That's a different (and imo less useful) definition of reactionary. Reactionaries in the sense that I'm talking about are those that want to return society to some previous (generally awful) status quo.

[–] goat@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 year ago (2 children)

i mean there's art and a different perspective

[–] MonsieurHedge@kbin.social 9 points 1 year ago (2 children)

I don't particularly care for the perspectives of the fundamentally disgusting, the same way I wouldn't really care about the culinary opinions of a cannibal.

The funny thing about art and perspectives is that they're really not in short supply. You can afford to be pretty choosy with who you want to let hang out around you; that extends to say, immediately banning hexbear users on sight because they're assholes the same way you could ~~viciously dismember~~ ban anyone who posts fascist shit.

[–] PugJesus@kbin.social 6 points 1 year ago

The funny thing about art and perspectives is that they're really not in short supply.

But GOOD art IS in short supply, and I'm strongly of the opinion that as long as the artist is dead or otherwise can no longer benefit from the popularity of their work, it is our duty, as art appreciators, to appreciate said work. o7

Lovecraft - shitty human being, amazing writer.

[–] goat@sh.itjust.works 8 points 1 year ago (1 children)

just not with dialogue lol

Man his dialogue was so bad

[–] PugJesus@kbin.social 6 points 1 year ago (1 children)

There's a reason his stories are so description-heavy, lmao. It seems like half the time there's not a single human interaction within them.

[–] goat@sh.itjust.works 8 points 1 year ago (2 children)

suppose because he was a shut-in. not much interaction.

[–] yata@sh.itjust.works 5 points 1 year ago

He did correspond a lot, like a lot, and he also travelled the US several times (despite his poverty) where he met up with many of his correspondents.

[–] PugJesus@kbin.social 4 points 1 year ago

Lovecraft sympathy moment (along with only eating 3 things and being poor)
