If you're wondering like I was:
King - Mario and Bowser
Queen - Luigi and Bowser Jr.
Bishops - Peach/Daisy and Magikoopas
Knights - Yoshis and Birdos
Rooks - Toads and Goombas
Pawns - Coins and Koopa Shells
I feel like toads and goombas should have been pawns. Thwomp is the perfect rook. I can't think of a suitable replacement for the Mushroom Kingdom's rook other than stylizing it like Peach's castle.
Thwomp and Chain Chomp should have been the rooks.
But chain chomp is kind of also an enemy, right?
Chain Chomp are neutral, Peach has a pet Chain Chomp in MK3.
Peach guest staring in Mortal Kombat 3 was one of the most wild crossovers. The fatality with that chain chomp was gruesome.
Ah yes I was thinking they might have been but I couldn't think of any examples.
I always thought Mario and Luigi should have been the knights. You know, the only pieces that can jump.
It makes sense. There are two of them, and only one Luigi. There needs to be two bishops, and one queen.
I mean... They're both princesses after all, not queens...
And technically, the piece that is called "Queen" in the west was originally called "Vizier", meaning "king's advisor".
