Who says everything that's ever been produced and being created right now (including this comment) isn't just being mass collected and dumped into a LLM right now?

It's like pirating digital data like a movie or ebook, everyone is told not to do it but everyone is capable.

Do you think capitalist, money hungry media companies haven't already done it.

If this is opt-out by default it's at least not a complete dick move. The hard limit of $2500 compensation for opting in? Definitely a dick move.

It's still a dick move, because Harper Collins has a huge amount of oligopoly power. Any supposed concession is likely of no real use to any authors who rely on the big companies to get published.
