A notification popped up on my phone today talking about this. I hit the button to adjust the settings and found that it was opt-out.

No, I don't want my app usage being used for ads. I don't want targeted advertising at all, but none of our fucking countries will take a stand against this shit.

This might be the thing that finally pushes me to switch to GraphineOS.

There was a time that I felt like Google was one of the good guys; they seemed to be doing great things with their products and pushing Linux. Now I feel like I want to de-Google my life.

Google keeps a log of every app opened and for how long.

Is how long what they mean with "how you use them"? Because otherwise it sounds a lot creepier than that.

It's the creepier one, they would know how long you use it, what options you tap or don't tap, where you use the app and much more, who last called or messaged you. That's why you always have to be careful about what permissions an app asks for, you're never going to make a call from a puzzle game.

Yeah, even with opt-outs they still track you as much as possible. I've already transferred to GraphineOS but it's not a "fix all" solution, it's largely based on apps and services you use. But yes, it's a step in the right direction and better then stock Androids.

Google; whose unofficial motto was “Don’t be evil” until they silently took it down…

Was this because of a recent update?

[–] rivalary@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 year ago

I don't believe there was an update, but maybe an app update in the background?

It probably was already there but they had to flip the switch to show me the message.
