I've recently read Cows, Pigs, Wars, and Witches: The Riddles of Culture by Marvin Harris, that dedicates a chapter to this subject. It's a good read, I recommend.

Reminiscent of the Arthur Clarke maxim that any technology, sufficiently advanced (in this case compared to that available in mid 20th century Polynesia) is indistinguishable from magic.
