I just saw this. My wife and I love this movie, and always excpected that it would stretch the truth a bit. Anyone know more about this, or have and insights to what it means (legally, morally, etc).

This is the best summary I could come up with:

Michael Oher filed a petition in a Tennessee probate court accusing Sean and Leigh Anne Tuohy of lying to him by having him sign papers making them his conservators.

In the petition filed in Shelby County Probate Court, Mr Oher asks for the conservatorship to be terminated and to be paid what he is due from the money earned off the use of his name and story along with interest.

He also alleges they had him sign paperwork almost immediately afterwards as part of the adoption process and also encouraged him to call the attorney who made the filing "Aunt Debbie" Branan.

The petition alleges the Tuohys began contract negotiations for movie rights and reached a deal for them — as well as children Sean Jr and Collins — to be paid $US225,000 ($385,000) plus 2.5 per cent of future defined net proceeds hinging on Mr Oher's signature.

In the petition, Mr Oher asks for a full accounting of his assets and how they were used, considering his life story produced millions of dollars and he received nothing for the rights to something that would not have existed without him.

Spears's high-profile battle put a spotlight on efforts that advocates across the United States have launched raising questions that such strict controls result in more harm than protection.

A conservatorship is a legal arrangement that allows one adult person to make decisions for another adult person as though that other person was a child. Its usually used for adults who have severe cognitive problems that cause them to not be competent to make legal, financial and medical decisions. The family having conserved this guy means that they can force him into a contract and keep any money he earns. It's abusive in this context.

oh dear. That would be really disappointing if true.

Can’t wait to see how his “family” responds.

At least now they can make a sequel

They better, just so he can get the money he deserves

[–] koberulz@lemmy.ml -1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Why does he deserve any money? You can't copyright facts.

[–] quicksand@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Because it's his life story... Why do random people who took advantage of him deserve money?

[–] koberulz@lemmy.ml 0 points 1 year ago (1 children)

They don't, either.

It being his life story doesn't matter. It's a true story, he can't copyright it.

[–] quicksand@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I don't think that's how it works

[–] koberulz@lemmy.ml 0 points 1 year ago (1 children)

You can't copyright facts. How would the world even function if you could?

So how do people sell the rights to their life story? Are you 16, if so that's fine. Good talk

[–] koberulz@lemmy.ml 0 points 1 year ago

It's legal to sell things.
