Bent cooler pad (lemmy.world)
submitted 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) by drunkenjoe@lemmy.world to c/buildapc@lemmy.world

Hi guys, I got this second hand NOCTUA NP-U12P SE2 heatsink and unfortunately the CPU pad is kinda "bent" or rather not aligned. I tried to gently rotate it back, but it is stuck alright. Have anything like this ever happen to any of you? Should I leave it as is or try more to level it? Do you think it will somehow impact the performance? Any suggestions are welcome. Cheers

edit: I hope this is the right community. If not, feel free to delete this post.

Edit 2: Thanks everyone for your comments. The consensus is this thing is trashed. In the end I ended up buying a new one. Mostly because of your comments and definitely because the damn thing is missing the right adapters and can't be attached to my motherboard xD

That would get a no from me.

It may look fine and even install fine, but years down the road when suddenly you are getting blue screens due to a hair line fracture, it won't be worth it.

The cooler is easier/cheaper to replace than the cpu. Do it before it becomes an issue.

Hi, thanks for your comment. I tried to installed to see how well it fits and found out the heat sink is missing adapters for my board so it can't be attached. I ordered a new one immediately after that. I've updated the post with this conclusion. Cheers!

That thing is trash.

Even if it mounts and doesn't break anything much more important like the CPU or motherboard the heat pipes don't look like they have full contact anymore. Minor damage to the heatpipe and pad interface will cause huge issues with heat transfer. Considering the cost of a cooler vs everything else I would not use it.

I haven’t ever seen anything like that (I’m not exactly experienced either way). There’s a single question on my mind tho, if you install that on a motherboard, does it do proper contact and the tower is slightly sideways or does it not contact and the tower remains vertical?

I haven't tried to install it yet, but the pad itself looks intact and from the looks of it I suppose the contact will be ok and the tower will be tilted. Today I'll probably try to install it so I'll let you know.

Well i tried it and the heatsink doesn't fit as it is missing the rifht adapters. I at least salvaged the fan and bought a new heat sink. I've updated the post. Thanks for your comment.
