Ok, but why have the signs at all if no smoking is permitted? I get that when no smoking was being phased in to have the sign, but it has been over 20 years. Get rid of the sign all together

I was curious about this as well, and according to a quick search, the signs are still in place due to a handful of international airlines that still allow smoking.
Interesting - I took a domestic flight in New Zealand yesterday and the signs were "seatbelts" and "no laptops" - obviously the NZ CAA has different rules
