The upgraded model has the same low-end adjustability and a wider wide vs the old style. Yet, it's only compatible with 27.5 - 29"?

Yeah I would say that's a typo. I assume it does the same as the one on the left but up to a larger max size

That's what I think, too. I see no reason to go with the old style, since it's like a few dollars less.

Look at the top. They are both adjustable to the same minimum range. The suitable for label is just for people looking for a quick answer to see if theirs will fit.

29" is the largest bike wheel diameter that I've heard of.

29" is 700c, and a common size.

But you can go bigger, like these 32" wheels:
