Why are they not all the same number? Multiple people got the same medal? Why is this so much more often with bronze?

[–] lugal@sopuli.xyz 32 points 1 month ago (3 children)

Iirc judo always gives two bronze medals but I'm not sure if this is the case in the Olympics as well. Maybe other disciplines do the same. And according to the metric, it might be possible to have the same points and therefore share one medal.

Gold having 1 more is weird because you would expect no silver if two have gold and therefore a difference of 2. Maybe in one weight class there only qualified one person and got the medal by default?

Vinesh Phogat was disqualified for being overweight during the weigh-in of the 50kg women's wrestling final. Her opponent got gold, and both losing semifinalists got bronze.

It became a big controversy in India because she had been <50kg for every match until then, and she had previously protested against the wrestling federation - which chose her dietician and other staff - for covering up sexual assault cases.

Contest #1: 2 Gold - 0 Silver - 1 Bronze

Contest #2: 1 Gold - 2 Silver - 0 Bronze

Having one gold more makes perfect sense if you look at multiple contests.

It is (I watched an Olympics judo event).

Miss Universe has always been won by someone from Earth. Coincidence?

[–] lugal@sopuli.xyz 25 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I did some digging and the jury is also always from that planet and also quite racist. It's not only always someone from earth but also from the human race.

That's why analyzing power structures is so crucial. I don't believe that they actively exclude non earthers or non humans, but the jury is more likely to choose their own kind and the people putting together the jury are as well.

Iirc there is a strategy in the US in one team sport for management to have a quota, not in outcome but the shortlist has to contain one non human (or non white, I'm not sure) and that alone raised the outcome because it made people seen that were invisible for the committee before.

[–] pyre@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago

you made me want to look it up. apparently the official story is that non humans simply don't apply as much to even qualify. but of course this is likely a classic case of societal expectations and the way we raise our young.

most wolves for example don't even know they could apply for miss universe, but that creates a catch-22 type situation where this is informed by lack of representation, which makes wolved think they're not even considered for miss universe, but in that belief they refrain from applying and there's a vicious cycle that effectively excludes wolves from miss universe.

Neptune hasn't won a single medal since Phelps retired

[–] Seigest@lemmy.ca 30 points 1 month ago

Still shocked they kicked out Pluto over a doping scandal.

[–] c0ber@lemmy.ml 25 points 1 month ago

curious the planet with the most medals is the same planet the olympic committee is headquartered in

[–] tissek@sopuli.xyz 22 points 1 month ago (5 children)

Why is mercury ranked second despite having the same number of medals (zero) as the unranked ones? Who did Mercury pay off for this "mistake" to happen? Is big Mercury subtly trying to influence our perception of them?

Those "unranked" ones are actually tied for second place.

[–] saigot@lemmy.ca 5 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

Mercury didn't win a medal but was given an honorary one for winning the freestyle orbital revolution in a record 88 days.

[–] SuperEars@lemmy.world 4 points 1 month ago

I was thinking the OC could've (should've) started some shit by putting them in order by distance from the sun as they are now, except for putting Saturn before Mercury. And then enjoy the hand wringing.

[–] Chekhovs_Gun@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago

It's just based on their proximity to the sun

This is so insensitive. None of those planets sent any representatives for at least the last 12 years and you aren’t even acknowledging why.

[–] lugal@sopuli.xyz 6 points 1 month ago

From what my history teacher tought me, the ancient Olympic games might have been inspired by people from other planets than earth, but I think outside the solar system

[–] dodgy_bagel@lemmy.blahaj.zone 4 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

Out of the hundreds of judges, over 97% were born on Earth.

All 97%, and all of the remaining 3%, have lived on or in the orbit of Earth for the past three consecutive years. Their financial records indicate that their income is primarily from terrestrial sources.

[–] FluffyRaccoon@lemmy.ml 13 points 1 month ago (5 children)

I'm sad that Pluto got kicked out of the planetary Olympics...

[–] Tlaloc_Temporal@lemmy.ca 5 points 1 month ago

Justice for Ceres!

Pluto is a dwarf plant. They take part in the planetary paralympic games.

[–] AnUnusualRelic@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago

You gotta play by the rules. If you're too excentric, you'll get kicked out. He had it coming.

How can there be differing numbers of medals?

[–] the_strange@feddit.org 5 points 1 month ago

Sometimes there's a tie for a position which cannot be resolved by the current rules or won't be played out at all.

In athletics, for example in pole vault, you have several tries to reach a certain height, if two athletes are tied at the same height the amount if failed tries is compared, but this still leads to shared places quite often. In the sports where you're scoring points you might get a tie by having the same highest score, which is usually resolved by comparing the second or third best score, but even that might not always be sufficient. In some of the tournament sports there are no games for third place, so the losers of the semi finals share third.

[–] neumast@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago

Shared gold means no silver medal. (2 gold, 0 silver, 1 bronze)

Shared silver means no bronze medal. (1 gold, 2 silver, 0 bronze)

Shared bronze means shared bronze. Also some disciplines give out 2 bronze medals by default, which is the reason for the high number of bronze medals. (1 gold, 1 silver, 2 bronze)

[–] friendly_ghost@beehaw.org 10 points 1 month ago (1 children)

And as usual, Belters aren't even listed 😤

[–] renormalizer@feddit.org 2 points 1 month ago

Strangley reminiscent of American Football. Americans invent a sport that no one else likes to play. They hold a tournament and proclaim the winner of said tournament "World Champion".

[–] index@sh.itjust.works 9 points 1 month ago (1 children)

It's not, other planets aren't wasting a cent and increasing their pollution for this farce and corrupted event. You win the olympics by not participating.

[–] SuperEars@lemmy.world 4 points 1 month ago

Upvote for a quality zoo exhibit

[–] sasquash@sopuli.xyz 8 points 1 month ago

are the other planets even trying?

[–] Rakonat@lemmy.world 6 points 1 month ago (3 children)

How are there more bronze medals than silver, and more gold medals than silver?

[–] AnUnusualRelic@lemmy.world 7 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Nobody wants to be second. The olympics are very competitive.

Ties if the sport allows it. And if 2 people tie for gold, then nobody gets silver.

When Jupiter or Saturn finally wins some competitions are they going to get their medals in the form of precious metals aersolized into a vapor and stuffed into a mason jar?

[–] Wizard_Pope@lemmy.world 6 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Were there so many shared 3rd places?

[–] missphant@lemmy.blahaj.zone 9 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Sports like boxing come to mind where 3rd place isn't fought for, it's just bronze for both losers of the semifinals.

[–] Wizard_Pope@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago

Ah okay makes sense

[–] anhkagi@jlai.lu 4 points 1 month ago (2 children)

why is mercure second and all other planets not on the podium ?

[–] moody@lemmings.world 4 points 1 month ago

They haven't finished yet, and third place is still TBD

It was bothering me that the bronze medal was different... (It still does for the purpose of this chart)

Anyway, that's the just the other side. More interestingly, the gray hunk of metal is actually from the Eiffel Tower.
