Poor Golden King of Siberia. I've noted that they are particularly susceptible to getting toasted.

I read that sunlight also makes the skin tougher if it doesn't ruin it completely. Does it work to cover all the fruit with something and just leave the leaves exposed?

Oh yes, the sunscald pretty much ruins the side of the tomato it's on. You can save the other half, but in the case of this overlooked tomato, it was already way overripe.

Lots of people cover their plants with shade cloth to help prevent this (which I should really start doing), but the lazier method is just to keep an eye on the positions of where the tomatoes are growing, and nestle them back under leaf cover if they're getting too exposed.
