Hating (the out group).
Look at how Trump talks about Putin or Xi or Orban. They love (people that they think resemble) themselves.
Hate is what these weirdos do best.
At the centre of hating immigrants? The wealth gap
People need someone to blame and it isn’t going to be the guy with a mountain of cookies
Also, climate change. Climate refugees are making up an increasing percentage of immigrants (as well as contributing to an increase in the total number of immigrants) and that trend is only going to accelerate.
Well that’s on the hatie end not the hater
To be clear, it isn't the fault of destitute people in developing countries that they're being displaced due to climate change caused by rich people in developed countries.
In fact, the point I was really trying to get at is that right-wingers worldwide are manufacturing a refugee crisis with their environmental policy, and then using that as an excuse to crack down on minorities.
anyone: "Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"
GOP: "Y sO cOmMuNiSt!!!"
The hate, the greed, the anger, the smug bullying behavior… it all stems from the same thing: fear.
They’re afraid of change, afraid of people & cultures different than theirs, afraid of losing what little control & capital they may have, afraid of appearing weak.
And trump & his cronies prey on that fear to push their sick agenda. An agenda which boils down to taking away what little control & capital these people have, giving it all to billionaires, and then blaming people & cultures different than theirs.
American voters keep on voting for less immigration and our politicians keep on rewarding us with more.
Vance has a point there. You can think that nativism is selfish and bigoted (and I'm inclined to think so, as an immigrant myself) but you can't deny that it is popular. It appears to be the main driving force of the resurgence of the far right across the Western world. Opposing nativism may be what one's principles demand but it doesn't help win elections, especially when the widespread perception is that pretty much anyone who wants to can just walk into the country.
The current state of the Mexican border and the current policy towards asylum seekers are an anchor holding the Democrats back. They can still win and anyway it's too late now to change the situation before the election, but it would have been helpful if Biden had gotten it under control years ago.
I'm a 3rd generation from an immigrant family and absolutely support controlled immigration, even a lot of it. There seems to be often presented or perceived this false choice between no immigration and completely uncontrolled open borders. The conversation needs more subtlety, but Harris does at least seem to many to have some baggage related to the border the last three years.
"Controlled" is the right world. I think the perception that the federal government cannot or will not control immigration is hurting the Democrats more than the immigration itself. Ideally the immigrants entering the USA would only be the ones specifically chosen by the federal government.
Well, just to give a different, albeit also wrong, perspective (from a middle-european society):
Anyone that emigrated to the US after 1850 is not a native...so 70% of y'all are immigrants.
For me it is always a bit hilarious to read how immigrants are bitching about not letting too many immigrants in "their" country.
And as i said.... I know my point is wrong to start with, but i am honest and aware about my biased view. Something more people should or could be.
The right is always "the new right." Declaring themselves the brand-new face of everything good that's ever happened is their brand.
But it's still the same assholes pushing the same shit. Always has been. Always will be. Conservatism is about ingroups and outgroups. They don't think equality is real.
