How tf do people find out about events before they happen? I always find out about things that would have been good to join thanks to reporting after the fact.

When I google the event I see a Facebook event page and other event listings including an article from about a week ago talking about it.

Add various community group networks (social, chat, email and other) and I imagine the word got around.
