Good and bad are a spectrum. No one is 100% good or 100% bad. This is a prime example of this. There was enough good in each of them for it to come out on top and kill the bad guy. The good guy with a gun was inside them all along.

The children were being raised by someone who thought pulling a gun out to settle a traffic dispute was a good idea. They're likely better off now despite the trauma.
