I was curious so I checked on one of my clients. I have a few with a few different settings but this is my oldest still running.

I was curious, is there a way to set it up to always for PC to boot up and start peer sharing, I always use torrents for downloading movies on a road trips on laptop but leaving it over night I always only get a ratio of 0.5 or something.

I'm not the most familiar with torrents and a like, since I rarely go on road trips, but I love foss and would love to contribute somehow, I know that I can donate but I already struggle to pay rent >_<

I run Linux mint on both PC and laptop btw.

Not sure what platform and app you're using but on qBittorent you can set it to run on windows startup.

There's also an option to prevent the system from going to sleep (could be why you only get +0.5 ratio during the night). This last setting you can actually set it to download and/or upload.

I've been searching for hours, but it appears r(u)Torrent doesn't have any onboard way to see this kind of all time stats 😕 maybe someone knows a trick how to get this data out?

What's the hot torrent client these days

[–] rambos@lemm.ee 4 points 1 year ago

Qbittorrent recommended by most users it feels like. Check arrs mate (sonarr, radarr) if you havent. Thats hot, not torrent client 😉

qbittorrent
for seedboxes qbit or ru/rtorrent

Q is what I had used, mostly because it was lightweight and portable. I don't torrent like I used to 20 years ago, but it's good to know what to use if I decide need to.

[–] Appoxo@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 1 year ago

It's neat.
I exclusively torrent via my seedbox so I am kinda bound to rutorrent but I have no issue with my service (so far)

got into torrenting and a protonvpn subscription about a year ago, even with just 11 mbps upload i've gotten a fair bit of seeding in

Just for curiosity, why don't you use qBittorrent

I actually have it installed and tried switching years ago, but moving hundreds of torrents was super annoying and I just kinda forgot. Is there a batch torrent add now?

FYI it's 2.2.1 and only used on private trackers.

Edit: Yes, batch add is supported now. Also, I forgot about an annoying bug that I think also stopped me. The old version wouldn't correctly change language. Mine was stuck on Japanese when I'd prefer English and a bug in the program prevented it from switching over fully. It's fixed in the newest version. I'll look into switching over again.

Is just using VPN safe for seeding? Or do I need anything else on top?

[–] rambos@lemm.ee 7 points 1 year ago

You also need a kill switch. Kill switch will kill your torrent client network if VPN fails. Your home IP can leak if you have bad kill switch or if you dont have one at all.

Kill switch can be integrated in VPN client or set in torrent client, but probably best to use docker container gluetun and torrent client that runs behind it. Whatever you use check is it good kill switch

VPN is fine on its own if it is configured correctly. There are websites that will test your traffic to check and you should use one before seeding on a public tracker for the first time. A common mistake is a DNS leak.
