I'm not an expert, but it looks like a machine gun with quite some recoil and it's just sitting on a stump?
Just posing for a photo - they're both air crew, so they'd normally be in a plane anyway.
Today this photo looks goofy but damn I hope it was designed to be this way in the 1940s.
Only the most sophisticated bow and arrows are used in this army
