I want to keep a timeline of the places I go like Google Maps can, and export it to mac for my diary*. The maps app doesn't have to be great, it just needs to keep a timeline in the background, I would still use Apple Maps as my main navigation app.

*(ideally I can automatically export it somehow, perhaps with the Shortcuts and Scriptable app but just tell me any apps with a timeline and export feature)

OwnTracks allows you to keep track of your own location. You can build your private location diary or share it with your family and friends. OwnTracks is open-source and uses open protocols for communication so you can be sure your data stays secure and private.

While you’re at it, I use Privacy Insights which lets you track what every app on your phone is doing and where it’s talking to.

And I’d like to know why Apple Books keeps accessing my contacts.

No need to pay money friend. Go Settings > Privacy & Security > App Privacy Report

Can this app work without a server, like just log my location on-device?

That seems to only be available for Android.

If you just want geo coordinates, you could use any open source app and copy+paste them into a note or something.

I want an app that can track it automatically, and without having to open it to do so, Google maps on iOS does so. You can allow apps to always access your location to do so.

Owntracks , overland or traccar apps to track device coords when it moves

Then Owntracks offer a very basic webui to show your track or pins within a specific time period on a map

Dawarich has some extra features and can handle google takeout and both Owntracks and overland json's

https://github.com/Freika/dawarich

Traccar has many features too

All apps require a server

I am also starting a web app that fit my needs

It offers search , route grouping , and a date picker .

I'm struggling to implement new features like poi visited locations , google takeout import , support other apps except owntracka, beatify it a bit etc but I'm no real Dev .

Either way you might want to have a look
