S21 vs S22 vs S23 (lemmy.world)
submitted 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago) by Pomelolo@lemmy.world to c/askandroid@lemdro.id

Hello, I'm looking to upgrade my Huawei PSmart 2020 and considering these 3 options.

-Galaxy S21 5G 128GB - 276€

-Galaxy S22 5G 128GB - ~~276~~ 378€

-Galaxy S23 128GB - 539€

Which one is the best price-quality match? If you have any other recommendations I'll be happy to hear them.

I'm in Spain and the store selling them is backmarket. Thanks!

The S21 doesn't make sense if the S22 is the same price.

So the decision is the S22 or the S23. Do you feel the S23 is worth almost twice the price?

The S23 pictures and videos are better, but the S22 does just fine if you aren't someone who uses the camera features often. Some people prefer the S22 selfies and colors thought. The S22's battery isn't as good as the S23. The S23 has a much better processor, but will you even notice the difference with your typical usage? Both phones use the same storage controller, the 256gb S23 got the upgraded hardware, so don't expect wildly better in read/write or response between the S22 and S23 128gb.

Ah I messed up with the prices, the S22 is 100€ more expensive than the S21. Just fixed it.

I'd still say S22 over the S21, so you still have to decide if the S23 is worth the jump in price vs the S22.

Thanks! I will be buying from a reseller site so the S23 is 128Gb at that price. The 256Gb one is going for 666€. I don't play any games on the phone and it's mostly an extension of my PC (email, chat, social media) and my actual phone battery lasts like half a day so my expectations are not spoiled lol

My biggest worry is how long I can expect each phone to last. Hoping for 5 years at least.

Samsung supports their phones' software for 5 years, so the S22 has 3 years of support left. My only concern about the lifespan you are hoping for is the battery on the S22. I would factor in the potential cost of a battery replacement in two years in your decision.

The upgrade in performance for all of these phones versus your Huawei are going to be absolutely monumental.

If you want to keep this phone for a few years, I'd suggest the S23. It's got 3 years of OS updates and 4 years of security patches and the others are likely to have battery issues in the next year or two(especially the S22, it has known battery drain problems already). Having the Snapdragon on the S23 will almost guarantee you'll be able to install custom ROMs beyond the end of Samsung official support, as well.

If you can live with only 128 GB then S22. It has no SD card, so no upgrade ever, those are filled up with videos quickly. At 144 Mb/s (18 MB/s) it's 1 minute of video per GB. 1 hour and half the storage is full.

This is the big reason I still do not know where to go after the S20. I have 1 TB in that, for not even 100 €.

Phones with memory card slots have become rare. It's now either samsung A phones or some random Chinese phones.

Out of these, the s22 seems like the best value to performance.

Personally, I would get the pixel 8a and sell your phone if possible.

[–] Blaze@reddthat.com 2 points 5 months ago

Doesn't the S22 have battery issues (SOT being very short)?

[–] Pomelolo@lemmy.world 2 points 5 months ago (1 children)

I'm planning to get a pixel in the near future with GrapheneOS as a secondary device but I'm still looking for a main phone for all the slop-apps. I just fixed the price for the S22, wrote the wrong one, I apologize.

[–] Fake4000@lemmy.world 3 points 5 months ago

Yeah. For that price of the s22, I would get a new pixel 8a definitely.

[–] potentiallynotfelix@lemdro.id 2 points 5 months ago

I'd say to rule out the s22, because for cheaper you could get almost the same, and for more you could get a more stable experience. It's up to you to decide if you want a cheaper phone or higher quality phone.

S23 if you can afford it. S21 is a bit old now and the S22 will have poor battery backup.
