This is pretty interesting. It's a shame that mojeek doesn't appear to be FOSS. There are plenty of FOSS frontends to big tech engines, but honestly I would sleep better not using those backends. Private.sh looks decent at a glance. Has anyone been using this more?

Mojeek has answered the question about open sourcing their engine here https://community.mojeek.com/t/is-mojeek-open-source/237/2

They are constantly tweaking so it will get better.

Gigablast and Private.sh implement some nice ideas, but these engines have always seemed a bit shady to me. I am yet to see any proof or at least an opinion implying the opposite.
