I’ve watched it about 10 times now. It really does get better with more viewings. If you just ignore some of the superficial stuff, it’s a great story of a failing actor dealing with loss of fame, popularity and continued success in fickle Hollywood. His waning self confidence is exacerbated by alcoholism. I think it’s some of DiCaprio's absolute best work.

Also I think Brad Pitt won a best supporting actor Oscar for this one and for the life of me I can’t figure out why. His role had no range whatsoever. (Kind of a weird because he was leading man in Ad Astra the same year with the same stilted acting style)

The final act in the film is just pure Tarantino revenge porn which he has built a reputation on. It’s a trademark for him.

I agree, DiCaprio was very good.

And on further reflection, I've only seen it twice, I think the story was taken from Once Upon a Time in The West. He even used that same very famous opening shot of the town and many other angles. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CdL__zuZvpA&t=228s
