But you still need an account or no? I'll just buy something else, giving Meta any money is both completely avoidable and morally correct.

You definitely will. This requirement effectively bricked my OG Quest since I refuse to have anything to do with Facebook. I really need to look into side-loading and/or firmware projects around it. They broke the promise that they would never require a Facebook account and somehow the justice system said, yeah, but this is a Meta account, so it's all cool...

FU Meta - you'll never see another dollar from me. In fact you owe me $400.
