The alternate plan of a protected lane wasn’t even presented. All this new center bike lane does is risk riders lives and add a few more metered parking spaces. Those parking spaces were, I suspect, the real motivation.

Are jersey barriers not an option? Ive seen them used for pedestrian paths which divide traffic. It isn't a panacea but wouldn't it be less likely for bikers to fall over the barriers and for cars to enter the lane?
