"If you flag our lies, we'll cry!!!!" -Republicans
Are you asking for big tech to decide what's true or not?
// Not American or conservative in the least, but the idea sounds dystopian to me.
Beats the hell out of the Republicans deciding it. The Pandemic outed them.
Republicans certainly seem a bit insane but I don't see how I don't see how that means we should be ok with big business being arbiters of truth, with no oversight.
Business will further the interests of their shareholders, democrat, republican or not. Giving them carte blanche to "create truth" is giving the shareholders that power, most of which is controlled by a few investment banks. They do not care about us or societal problems.
No one needs to give big tech permission to do anything. When it serves their interests they just shove it down peoples throats no questions asked.
The only reason we're having this discussion is because right wing lies generate revenue for them so they let it happen.
The only reason there even exists an argument that curbing the spread of dangerous lies is somehow an infringement upon people's "freedom of speech" is because its a convenient scapegoat for platforms to justify not doing something about it and for the bad actors to keep on doing it and face no repercussion.
IMO, when it comes down to it, Facebook is a company, and they can censor their web site however they want to.
It is not the tech companies deciding that is the problem, it is the people giving them the authority to decide for them.
