They probably definitely need cleaning

Certainly, in that case. You generally want to do it about once a month, depending on how much you use it (and how dusty the place you're cleaning is), since it uses the ones in the barrel to catch all the fine dust (also why I dislike the thing rather much), and will spit some of it out into the exhaust filter, clogging that one too.

The way I usually like to do it is just drop it in a bucket with some laundry detergent, and wash it around a bit before putting it out to dry on the porch table, which seems to work well enough.

I'm going to vacuum seal some stuff into space bags first (in case I break it) and then do that
