Hey all, just a reminder: This influx of shilling on Lemmy posting memes leading to the conclusion "please don't vote, it's not worth it, it won't make a difference, and Biden's very very bad anyway" -- it's all for one simple reason: Voting works. It is one of the rare opportunities the normal-person population has to influence the people in charge, by some small degree. It's not enough, but it's also not to be wasted.
The whole reason there's all this investment of time and energy into manipulating people's opinions is the same reason there's so much energy towards manipulating the impact of their vote after the fact, or their ability to cast it in the first place: It's worth it to put in the investment of energy and money that it takes to do that. Because voting has power.
Voting's not enough to change the system, of course. But given the choice between voting or not voting (in this particular election, at least) is like asking "will eating food or not eating help this hungry person to survive."
This is addressed in the video I posted 16 minutes ago, and is 34 minutes long. Proving you didn’t actually watch the video. Who’s the shill?
Edit: And your upvotes couldn’t have watched the video either. Again, who’s the shills?
I'm not planning on watching the video, no. I don't want to give it views to push it up the algorithm, and I already know that if the conclusion is "voting is silly," then it's wrong and not worth watching.
You're free to feel that's unfair if you want, but it's not.
Just sad that you didn’t give the video a fair review, while calling me a shill for posting a thought-provoking video essay.
Isaac Asimov
I didn't watch it either. write an essay if you feel its so thought provoking and post that. Like the other guy im not giving this views.
Why? So, you can refuse to read that for.., reasons? Stay uninformed.
cut the bullshit. this is clickbait expecially given your responses. You can host this on a non commercial platform but you didn't.
Here is a piped link. I’m not associated with BadMouse, and I don’t necessarily agree with their politics. I did, however, find the video informative. So, I thought I would share.
thats more reasonable. I will now give it a look later. Granted though I still find video a poor means of intellectual discourse over the formal written word.
This is Breadtube, not !keepwriting@lemmy.world
So the title made me initially not want to watch and then the video itself told me its not meant for me in the first minute or so. So anyway I find a lot of his arguments are not as problematic when proper laws keeping money out of politics, which is now impossible in the US given the citizens united ruling. Well impossible till congress acts to correct the judicial mistake (and it is such a massive mistake given how much the constitution emphasizes power is reserved ultimately for the people)
Thanks for taking the time, even if you don’t agree with their politics. It is important to find common ground, if possible, with differing points of view. There is a way through this, but only if we work together, despite political differences. It can happen.
You gave an old man hope today. Thanks.
Its a tough subject overall as peoples definitions sorta can differ. Citizens united from the us has certainly effected my outlook and now, at the least, I question the wisdom of having any type of legal shielding around trusts and corporations and other legal entities like religions and non for profits. So I have become somewhat of an anti corporatist as opposed to capitalist.
it is although my preferences remain. What it comes down to is if video is what your sending then expect people to watch or not to watch based on what they glean from text. ie - title and description. Ain't no one got time to watch every video they come across. Well except my wife. What! dear! no I was not talking about you.
Paradoxoftolerancesayswhat
Incorrect usage. Here’s a video that explains why, that you probably won’t watch.
This looks like one of those weird kids' Youtube videos that has been in the uncanny valley for so long that it's gotten settled in and set up a thriving sustainable business for itself there
But it uses the paradox correctly.
I did actually watch the paradox video just out of curiosity. Between the weird and offputting presentation and the first video which says literally nothing except "now that you've watched this video, click here, and watch the real video!" I decided it was safe to conclude it was bullshit.
I mean, I do know what the paradox of tolerance is. "You have to give me a full open hearing each and every time I come into your little space to broadcast propaganda, just in case this new thing is innocent and insightful and just happens to look like the rest of the propaganda purely by coincidence" is a pretty textbook example. If you feel differently, you're welcome to say why, but I don't feel I'm obligated to run around watching extra videos to help you in the effort.
Thanks for the discussion. It really helps push this post further up the algorithm.
I watched some of it, all I saw were specious arguments that I'd expect to hear from goth teenagers at the mall. Maybe tankies find this kind of stuff compelling, rational people probably won't.
You might like another video from BadMouse, The Problem with Tankies. I don’t know of his predilections towards Goths, so your inferences seem irrational.
