I downloaded the latest development release of GIMP today to check out the effects layers and it's awesome! Such a happy day for me to edit non-destructively in GIMP! Really looking forward to the stable release :)

Well it won't be long until it's included in the stable release, so good news :) Not sure what you mean about the backward UI tho. Do you mean the menu structure?
