The Aldi smoked rainbow trout fillets are very nice. I'm not so fond of the truffle oil infused trout fillets, but the plain ones are lovely. I like their plain sardines in oil but these sell out fast. I don't like the sardies with horrid gloopy sauces that Aldi sells. If I want a gloopy sauce, I'll make it myself.

Preston market fishmongers have nice smoked cod fillets (not entirely sure it's really cod but definitely smoked) and I use these quite a lot. I would assume Vic market likewise would have a good range.

Most mediterranean grocers have baccala which is basically baconised white fish. Needs to be soaked to remove excessive salt but once soaked is nice in stirfries and fish pies etc. and just magic in an omelette or a rich tomato/garlic based fish stew (bouillabaise). Nice for pizza topping too.

I do get colesworth plain sardines in oil when I can't find any at Aldi - they are the cheapest. Also colesworth can be relied on for tinned crab meat (when I can't be bothered sourcing, cooking and picking fresh crab).

Most IGAs have John West stuff, including kippers, and sometimes other brands. Prices are higher but there's usually a good range.

NQR occasionally has tinned fish both plain and fancy and this is a good source for stocking up the larder when they have stock in.

If stocking up, I'd start with NQR, and then Preston market, and then Aldi, and then IGA and then, and only then, colesworth.

Thanks for the rec. Probably should've worded my post better, was more looking for fancy schmancy stuff.

I'm making up a little gift for someone.

Noice! Myer used to sell cute little tins of WA sardies packed with a sprig of lemon myrtle in the tin - super delicious. Maybe Myer or DJs have something similar in their gormet food hall.
