I am not familiar with the legal situation this instance's server and owner is in, are there any actions a user could take that could expose the operators to legal liability? Could the instance face problems if someone posts a link to pirated content? What about general discussion of piracy? Or any other possibly legally problematic content?

Tchncs is hosted in Germany, so I guess applicable law would be §§ 7, 8 TMG. The gist of it is that the admin is not liable for any content posted, but has to delete any illigal content they come across

EDIT: added link to the law

EDIT2: also, I'm not a lawyer, this is not legal advice and take anything I said with a grain of salt

My 2c as a layperson...

A link to pirate material is not "illegal", it's a civil matter. That means admins wouldn't have to look for and remove such material in the same way they would for say illegal pornographic material.

They do need to respond to take down notices from copyright owners or face a civil lawsuit.

This is just supposition but I imagine this means that discussion of piracy is ok but links to specific copy right materials are not.

Sites like reddit don't allow discussion of piracy because advertisers don't like it... but if I were an admin of a lemmy instance I wouldn't care about that.
