For those that don't know, CODE-CWA is the Campaign to Organize Digital Employees, ran by the bottom-up international union Communication Workers of America. Microsoft had previously signed a card-check labor neutrality agreement with CWA, as the ABK Workers Alliance is actively coordinating with CODE

most people impacted were in Customer Service, Artists, Designers, Programmers, etc. The people cut were in areas that have been short staffed for nearly a year. HR was minimally impacted.

Edit: additionally, labor laws also exclude central business operations (like hr, er, management, security) from being in a union. CWA is speaking on behalf of workers that are capable of organizing, though they recognize that cutting management is also horrible. That's because it's always low level management who are crucial for daily operations.

I can only speak to developers, but lots were let go including friends.
