I often wonder about these hats. They are so embarrassingly, unbelievably goofy. How did anyone think it was a good idea to dress soldiers in them?
That same person was likely a fascist which says all you need to know about their taste, or lack there of. Either that or someone wanted the fascist police to look silly on purpose.
Edit: OP sent me down a rabbit hole with their reply, all I can tell from what I’ve read is that the founder of the force thought it was elegant and uniform.
Well, the Guardia Civil and their silly hat is older than the fascist regime. They still wear the hat in modern Spain too.
